My Work with Parents
I work with a limited number of parents who want to support their child's literacy at home. I share the requisite theory, practical tools, resources, and recommendations to
understand language & literacy strengths and needs of the child
support the child's language & literacy acquisition in ways that nurture a love of learning, and more importantly, in ways that do not cause a negative impact on the child's relationship with learning
make sense of what the school is requiring the child to learn and do
collaborate with the school to ensure that the child flourishes as a learner
Examples of Parent Consultations
"I'm a working mother of a 3-year-old child, and I'd like to begin focusing on his literacy acquisition. I want it to be fun and engaging for my child. Googling about it only increased my confusion. I hear from my friends that schools discourage involvement from parents unless it is exactly how they want it to be. What can I do? Where should I begin?"
"My son is 5 years old and enrolled in a Montessori school. Since they don't send any books/materials home, I'm not very sure about what he is learning and whether he is learning. The school just says that he is doing fine, but doesn't share any details about his learning. He doesn't seem to want to engage with me when I talk about reading and writing. How can I be more informed and engaged in my child's literacy?"
